Overview of Accelerator Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
نویسنده
چکیده
There is renewed interest in performing a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment using accelerator neutrinos because of a discrepancy between the measured and the predicted values of the ratio of electron to muon neutrinos produced in the upper atmosphere by cosmic rays. The approximate range in oscillation parameter space indicated by the Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino results and confirmed by IMB is bounded by 10 eV 2 < ∆m20 < 10 −1 eV 2 and sin 2θ0 > 0.4 . To reach such small ∆m 2 0 , using an accelerator as the source of neutrinos where the energy is typically 1 GeV or greater, requires baselines in the range of 10 km to 1000 km. In this talk I will give an overview of the most likely possibilities for such a long baseline accelerator neutrino oscillation experiment. Invited talk at the “Moriond Workshop on Neutrino Physics”, January 30 to February 6, 1993 at Villars, Switzerland.

متن کاملNeutrino Cross Section Measurements for Long-baseline Accelerator-based Neutrino Oscillation Experiments
Neutrino oscillations are clear evidence for physics beyond the standard model. The goal of next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments is to find a non-zero θ13, the last mixing matrix element for which we only know an upper limit. For this, next-generation long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments require an order of magnitude better sensitivities. In particular, accelerator-based e...
متن کاملLong baseline neutrino oscillation experiments
Evidences for neutrino oscillations coming from atmospheric and solar observations can be probed by terrestrial long baseline experiments. This requires accelerator beams or nuclear power plants. The current status of these searches as well as future activities are discussed. A precise determination of all matrix elements and searches for a leptonic CP-violation will be possible with high inten...
متن کاملNeutrino oscillation physics with a FNAL proton driver
The Fermilab proton driver (FPD) is proposed to consist of a linear accelerator and several main injector modifications. Its purpose is to provide higher fluxes to potential experiments, such as neutrino oscillation experiments [1,2], or muon, kaon, pion, neutron, or antiproton experiments [1]. It is aiming for 8GeV and (up to) 120GeV protons at about 2MW, which is a factor of five to ten past ...
